Lucknow, March 23 (ANI): With election fever gripping India, traditional ‘Khadi’, or handspun clothes that had become very popular during the freedom struggle, are once again in vogue. After independence, Khadi lost its important position and became merely synonymous with politicians. However, the fabrics hand-spun in villages are making a come back with gaining acceptance amongst the fashion glitterati that find the light cloth with its variety of weaves and spuns a perfect style material.

‘Khadi’ losing its popularity in Gujarat

Lucknow/Ahmedabad, March 31 (ANI): Handspun cotton, popularly known as ‘Khadi’, is slowly losing its popularity among political parities in Gujarat for the upcoming elections in the country. Gujarat, which is known for pioneering Khadi through Mahatma Gandhi, is one of the hubs of Khadi outlets in the country, but is loosing its grip from an average Indian to a politician in the country. But, shopkeepers believe that the upcoming elections would make up for their declining trade, which has been already affected by the economic slowdown.

Mrinalini and Mallika Sarabhai have created a new short performance piece that traces the history of Khadi and handlooms in India. The piece highlights Gandhiji’s use of khadi as an instrument to dislodge the British Raj, as well as traces references to the metaphor of weaving, of the warp and the weft, in Hindu mythology and in the Vedas. This performance was launched during the week long Rajasthan Fashion Week in Jaipur on September 15th, 2008.

Khadi board is the first organization in the public sector in kerala to go completely paperless. They will complete their ongoing implementation by this December and guess what powers them ? its GNU/Linux. And they thrive on community support. This video was taken when they visited the GNU/Linux install fest at Technopark , conducted by GNU/Linux users group Trivandrum ( http://ilug-tvm.org/ ), where they offered any kind of sponsorship to FOSS communities programs .
