Anyone know much about the different fabrics used in making sarees in India?

October 18th, 2009 | by admin |

I am wondering what exactly these types of fabrics are.
Silk georgette
Crepe Silk
Chiffon Silk
Kota Silk
Brocket Silk
Micro Georgette

Thanks for any info.

Except for the micro-georgette (which might be polyester), the key there is ’silk’. Silk is all the same fiber, so all the other words are descriptions of types of weaves. Look up ‘crepe weave’ and so on in a search engine. Some of them are specific to India, such as the Kota weave. See example in the links for kota.

Brocket might be a kind of jacquard. Crepe and chiffon and georgette belong to the same family (microgeorgette would be a much smaller and finer weave). The fibers are twisted before weaving to different extents – chiffon is smoother, crepe and georgette have a little more texture to them. Georgette doesn’t hold creases.

all of the above but everyday casual saris are usually made out of inexpensive rayon.
