What Factors went against Marathaas to repel invaders during Third Battle of Panipat?

December 25th, 2009 | by admin |

According to me, the major factor behind the Maratha defeat was the Hindus and Sikhs were not together in this battle . Had Marathas and Sikhs went into battle together against the invaders India would have regained the rights for the sons of the soil.

Later, in 1767, this same Abdali was defeated at the battle of Amritsar by the Sikhs. The Sikhs would later unite under Ranjit Singh and defeat the Afghans at many battles. They eventually took over a huge tract of Abdali’s empire extending till the Khyber pass.

However, the valour of the Marathas was MATCHLESS in history.

Plz. read this description:

"Sadashiv Bhau was found with almost twenty dead Afghans around him. Santaji Wagh’s corpse was found with over forty mortal wounds. Vishwa Rao, the Peshwas son’s bravery was acknowledged even by the Afghans."

IMAGINE one maratha killing 20 Afghans. And 1 sikh = how many? 100.

I hope we learn something from this and HINDUS & SIKHS always remain united so that no invader can ever defeat us.

Their internal feuding cost them greatly in this battle. The battle checked Maratha expansion, prevented the capture of Delhi, and encouraged the fragmentation of the empire. Even today the phrase in Marathi, "meet your Panipat", has a similar meaning as the phrase "meet your Waterloo" does in English.

As Proton has pointed out the internal feud in the Maratha confederacy was a major factor. Other than that it is also true that some nobles and kings like Shuja of Awadh and those who were defeated by the Marathas supported Abdali and his gang… They Marathas could not garner support from the Rajputs who were good warriors too.. Indian polity was bad and so was the social lay out. Each wanted power for himself and there was no unity.. This was the biggest setback in History is India..
