What would happen if farmers and industries along the River Rhine continued to pollute it?

How do farmers and industries pollute the River?
I know that salmon will only live in unpolluted areas so if pollution carried on, there would be a loss of salmon.
What other affects?

all the salmon would be gone and my cat would eat my gold fish but polluting is wrong we need to stop it if we want to live another day.
