What Industries Will Profit In A Deep Recession or Depression?

What types of industries or businesses are likely to profit in a deep recession or depression?
If there are no industries that will profit, what types of products do you think would profit? (alcohol, gold, etc)

I don’t think this is true; I think several businesses can profit in a deep recession. Especially if our problems are combined with the oil crisis.

Businesses that fix things do better in times of recession; people are more likely to get something fixed than go out and buy new ones. Shoe re-solers are a traditional example, but how about bread machine repair? I recently saw a post where someone was comparing the price of repair vs. getting a new one, so that’s already starting.

I think local food businesses will also do better. (-: The movie Kitt Kittredge is probably not your best resource for serious ideas, but the depression-era mothers in that movie were raising chickens and selling the eggs for a little extra money. The current thinking says how free-range is really the way to go, anyway, so you’ve got a double-punch for the viability of home-grown, organic food.

Cheap housing will also see an upturn. Kitt Kittredge again, but people were renting out extra bedrooms and sheds to make a little extra money. So, if you have relatively inexpensive apartments in an area near work, there’s a good chance you might make a profit.

(-: I’m pretty sure alcohol, other drugs, cheap entertainment, etc. will also profit.

Good question; I wish you’d gotten some more serious answers.

None really. Honestly, there are no industries or businesses I can think of that would benefit from a large scale contraction in the U.S. economy involving high levels of unemployment and a large scale reduction in the production of goods and services. No one benefits from this…

non that’s why it is a depression what brings us out of these things are when we need mass quantity of man power like a war so we need more people to build weapons and to fight which then gets the economy moving again because the fed will loan money to the companies they need which will in turn hire the people they need which will then spend or save that money and get loans from banks to buy things like houses and cars because they are working again and then the back gets loans from the fed because they drop below the required reserve rate and the system goes round and round creating more money and thus more wealth and brings us out of the depression

Law firms connected with the Demcrat party. They will profit as lobbist and administrators for these various bailout schemes.

Keep in mind that when ever things are bad in one area of the economy, it creates opportunities in another. History shows that their are more millionaires created in slow economies than in strong.
