How to tribal women weave with no loom?
On shows about tribal societies in South America and Africa, the women are often making bowls, clothing and other items by weaving grass or leaves with their hands. They don’t seem to be using knitting needles, a loom or a frame of any kind. What is this called, and how can I learn how to do it? It looks really fun and interesting to do. Are there any guides about this on the internet? Do any of you know how to do it? …Are the methods different depending on what you’re making, or what culture the thing you’re making is from?
I have a lot of time on my hands and I wanna learn something new ![]()
There are many styles of basket and mat weaving. Because the reeds and grasses used are of fairly stiff texture, no loom is needed. Braiding more flexible materials, like hair, also requres no loom, just a way of attatching one end of the material..
find some one who has a weaving book from the boy scouts/girl scouts there is a merit badge for each, with instructions on weaving with bamboo, willow and other materials, the rest is up to you and your imagination, common craft stores should have similar materials, you may have to search, but this is available
